How it started
Full disclosure: I’m not a coder.
Sibi Similis is a “vibe coded” AI project that started with a simple idea: I wanted to find an old-school music visualizer. Then I thought, what if I could make one for myself using AI?
The early versions were pretty rough, and honestly I didn’t have much hope for it at first. But with better models, better prompting, real research and a lot of trial and error, it slowly became something I think is halfway decent.
What the project became
A proof of concept that kept growing.
My goal then became: how can I illustrate what can be accomplished with AI when used effectively? At the very least, it’s a proof of concept; taking a random idea and using AI to help turn it into a real application.
I want to keep developing Sibi Similis. It may never be the best music visualizer in the world, but it’s still been a very fun and rewarding project.
Inspiration
Similar to itself.
Sibi Similis is Latin for “similar to itself.” The name comes from the idea of self-similarity, a pattern often associated with fractals, where shapes and structures repeat or resemble themselves at different scales.
That idea felt like a natural fit for the project: visuals built from repetition, mathematical patterns and small changes that can grow into something much more complex.
Mathematical influence
The Hopalong attractor
One of the main mathematical influences is Barry Martin’s Hopalong attractor, which became the starting point for several of the visual systems in the app.
Fractals & chaos
Cyberia, Mandelbrot, and the rabbit hole.
I also got interested in fractals and chaos theory while reading Douglas Rushkoff’s Cyberia, particularly the sections discussing Benoit Mandelbrot and the early culture surrounding fractal imagery.
None of these ideas are new; I just thought they were cool and wanted to experiment with them in my own way.
From there, I started combining attractor mathematics with particles, colour, movement and audio response to see what I could make.
That became Sibi Similis.
